Here's a look at the past. Items have been culled from The Chronicle's archives of 25, 50, 75 and 100 years ago. March 1: Fear of infection from dealing with the growing numbers of AIDS deaths is spreading among San Francisco's morticians. The morticians' fears were underlined when the family of an elderly woman, who contracted the disease from a tainted blood transfusion from Irwin Memorial Blood Bank, was persuaded to forgo a traditional Catholic open-casket funeral because embalmers were reluctant to make the necessary preparations.
But Tom Simpson, a funeral director with a large clientele in the gay community, said the reaction of morticians reflects "just out-and-out homophobia. Funeral directors come in contact with people who have died of deadly diseases all the time - it's part of the job and always have been. Because it's a new disease they've got these ridiculous and stupid fears." March 2: A Fisherman's Wharf restaurant was closed yesterday as the threat o read more »

Team Sky weathered a cold and rainy GP Lugano, won by Roberto Ferrari (De Rosa-Stac Plastic) after organisers shortened the race by one circuit due to a wayward car. It was dangerous, but I was lucky to escape the crash, said South African John-Lee Augustyn (Sky). It is good [they stopped it], because it was dangerous on the descent. One day after forming the main five-man escape group in the GP Insubria, Augustyn helped form the key escape group in Switzerland. He joined a group of 25 that went clear midway into the first of five 35.7-kilometre circuits around Lugano. Augustyn accompanied yesterday s winner Samuel Dumoulin (Cofidis), Ivan Basso, Ivan Santaromita, Oliver Zaugg (Liquigas-Doimo), Brent Bookwalter, Thomas Frei, Steve Morabito (BMC Racing), St phane Aug (Cofidis), Francesco Ginanni (Androni), Vitaliy Buts (Lampre-Farnese Vini), Maxime Bouet, Jos Luis Arrieta (AG2R La Mondiale), Ermanno Capelli, Giampaolo Cheula, David Gutierrez Palacios (Footon-Servet

McLaren s Lewis Hamilton was the quickest runner as pre-season testing drew to a close at Barcelona s Circuit de Catalunya on Sunday. Hamilton clocked a best time of 1m 20.472s around the Spanish circuit and finished over two-hundredths of a second ahead of the second-placed Red Bull of Mark Webber. The British driver spent the morning fine-tuning the MP4-25 s set-up and carrying out simulated qualifying runs. After lunch, he ran through a race simulation. He covered 134 laps in total. Webber, meanwhile, was only on track during the afternoon. His team mate Sebastian Vettel was in action during the morning following his disrupted session on Saturday. Webber covered 61 laps, whilst Vettel, who finished in fifth on the timesheets, completed 76 laps. Felipe Massa was third fastest for Ferrari after covering 114 laps in the F10. Force India s Adrian Sutil ended the day in fourth. Sutil worked through a full race programme, conducting a race simulation and qualifying runs, as

Stephen A. Wynn builds not just casinos, but billion-dollar fantasylands. In 2005, the $2.7 billion Wynn Las Vegas opened with a Ferrari and Maserati dealership on the premises, poolside blackjack, and a golf course with a waterfall towering 37 feet. He spent $1.2 billion on the three-year-old Wynn Macau in China, which showcased a tree sculpture of 2,000 branches and 98,000 leaves dipped in 24-karat gold. Now, the 68-year-old showman has redirected his sights from those gilded environs to a congested stretch of Columbus Boulevard in South Philadelphia, next door to a Wal-Mart. What on earth is Steve Wynn thinking? Taking over the foundering Foxwoods Casino project is not as much of a business non sequitur as it may appear, gaming analysts explain. They say it is a sign of the times. Besides, where else is Wynn to go? The gaming industry in the United States has experienced a tectonic shift. Increasingly, struggling states are looking at Pennsylvania's newfound success at gener

Massa's time of 1:20.539 was only six-hundreths back of Hamilton, while Sutil was 0.139 seconds behind, Vettel 0.195 and Schumacher 0.273. "They look very strong, no doubt, but it's still going to depend on what people bring to Bahrain," Schumacher said of McLaren's car. On Friday, Schumacher said the German team was unlikely to be fighting for a win at the season opener, but on Sunday he said that things were "slowly coming together." "Everyone had a go on low fuel loads and we're not a long way off, just a few tenths of where we want to be," Mercedes team principal Ross Brawn said.
"There's a new package for Bahrain and I hope that is going to make the difference." Mercedes isn't going into the 19-race season with the clear performance advantage that the former Brawn GP team enjoyed last year, when it survived Honda's exit to surprise everyone by taking the driver's and constructor's titles.

F1: Final day of winter testing for Hamilton and McLaren in Barcelona (The Welwyn & Hatfield Times)]
The 25-year-old from Herts will climb into the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes MP4-25 cockpit for the last time during winter testing at the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona. Hamilton takes over behind the wheel from F1 world champion Jenson Button, who was third quickest on Saturday. Mercedes GP driver Nico Rosberg was quickest yesterday with Toro Rosso’s Sebastien Buemi also faster than Button. Today will be the final day’s running for Hamilton before the season kicks off with the Bahrain Grand Prix in two weeks’ time. The 2008 world champion was only eighth fastest in Barcelona on the second day of testing on Friday, with Nico Hulkenberg setting the pace for Williams ahead of Ferrari newcomer Fernando Alonso. He was also almost half a second slower than seven-times world champion Michael Schumacher in the Mercedes GP. Hamilton continued the development work his team-mate began the day before, refining set-up and evaluating tyres. The morning was spent conducting shorter runs, atte
